tuplet numbers positioning
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
After adjusting the placement of tuplets by various methods (JW Change or with Utilities > Change > Tuplets), the position of the numbers has changed in some tuplets (but not all). They should be horizontally and vertically centered within (always flat) brackets. I can adjust them manually one by one, but isn't there somewhere a way to do this globally (after the fact)?

There are various settings that can cause some of these differences. Sometimes the result might seem inconsistent. Can we see a sample to examine?

It appeared there was some unusual spacing going on. When I locked the systems and applied spacing, the tuplet numbers looked more centered in places where things looked odd. I'm not sure how you got the odd spacing issues, or what may have been the cause.
It could be that the spacing is what you want. However, the tuplets might look uncentered in some places, when the notes themselves are not evenly spaced, causing the optical illusion.
That's my take on it anyway. Maybe I need to do a more detailed look at the file.

thanks, it's not so much the spacing I'm concerned with (this was just a test of importing a percussion MIDI file from a DAW), and that can be fiddled with. what I'd like to specifically adjust is the vertical position of the numbers in relation to the brackets

Vertical position. Okay. I thought you were concerned about the horizontal positioning (centering of the numbers over the tuplets). Sorry. I'll look mat it again.

I'm not sure there is a way to change the position of the numbers up or down globally, but you can change the vertical position of the bracket to line it up with the center of the number.

The default bracket and number postions shown below are a problem. If I were me, I'd put them back to the defaults (0, 24), set placement = above and Always Flat (if that's what you want_, then use JW Change to reset them to the defaults.
Actually, that's just fine - changing it with Utilities > Change Tuplets and entering an amount in the Shape/Vertical field will do it indeed. then the vertical position of the bracket can be adjusted and the corrected number position will stay with it
thanks again
Mike

If your goal in changing those numbers was to raise the brackets, that's fine, but you need to maintain the relative positions of number and bracket, so if you want the shape to be 16, then the number ("Tuplet") should be 40. But that will only work for tuplets above.

The tuplet settings could use an overhaul--for instance, you really need "above" and "below" versions of those numbers. The horizontal positions aren't ideal either. Long ago I did an experiment and got something that works in 3 of the four possible case (up-stem+stem-side, down-stem+stem-side, up-stem+note-side, down-stem+note-side). The misbehaving one is one of the two "note-side" cases, but I seldom use those so don't remember the details.
