In the attached example I used the double-ended bracket tool to show that the indicated note
is to be played with left hand thumb, but it doesn't look too great.
How do I extend the bracket ends in a downward direction to make it look clearer? Thanks.

You can also select the Custom Line Tool and find one of the lines that has a hook at only one end. Edit it to uncheck the Horizontal requirement. The horizontal check box is at the top next to the Line Style in the Smart Line Designer window that opens when you edit one of the lines. When inserting the line, pull the mouse straight down.

In the SmartShape tool, Ctrl-click the custom shape icon on the palette (looks like an underlined question mark). Pick the shape closest to what you want, duplicate it, and edit it. There's a box for the length of the hooks.musicus wrote:How??motet wrote:You can make a custom shape with ends as long as you like.

I have Finale 2011. "Ctrl-click the custom shape icon" doesn't do anything.motet wrote:In the SmartShape tool, Ctrl-click the custom shape icon on the palette (looks like an underlined question mark). Indeed, in Mac Finale it is Option-click on the Custom Line Tool’s icon, to specify the line.

The Bravura font has nice brackets of the type that you are looking for. Download the font and it them to your articulations or expressions. https://www.smufl.org/fonts/
Looking at your example without a context it would be easier to play and write:
