Old style tuplet creation
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I am using Finale Version 25.3 on Mac.
Could someone please let me know how to do the sextuplets (violins & violas) exactly as in the attachment without causing problems for the staves above? I can do them as fully notated sextuplets but that makes score formatting more difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In Speedy entry, type Ctrl-1 and specify 6 sixteenths in the space of 1 quarter. Then enter a dotted quarter. Add the slashes with the Articulation tool.
In Simple entry, I think you can enter the dotted quarter and then specify the tuplet by pressing Alt-9.

Thank you for your reply.
The solutions work for the entry of an individual tuplet but they don't remain in the score when adding the next tuplet. Well... they don't remain for me...
They either revert to an ordinary crotchet (quarter note) or disappear. I think I'll just enter simple crotchets with slashes and a graphic dot with 6 over the top. It won't play back musically exactly but I can use long notation on a separate file for play back.
Thanks again & merry Christmas.

You're likely doing something wrong, because I tried both entry methods as outlined above and they work for me. Simple entry is a bit easier, because you can make 6 sixteenths in the space of a quarter the default, and from then on just add the dotted quarter and press 9.
(For reasons known only to MakeMusic, the first "6" in each bar is off-kilter.)

I'm guessing you created one and then tried to copy/paste. Finale is worthless in that regard when it comes to many of the tuplets.

If you think about it, since the slashes are cosmetic as far as Finale is concerned and not part of the rhythm, 6 sixteenths in the space of a quarter combined into a dotted quarter note is a quarter note, so anything that causes Finale to simplify or retranscribe the rhythm is going to produce a quarter note. What's unclear is what that "anything" is and why it does that.
Yes, I see your point.
Generally, I have not had any issue with tuplets until now-
I have been using Finale since 1996 (or possibly 97) and this was the first
time I got stumped. All good now.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
