How do you retrieve Finale files from prior versions of Finale after updating?

The newest version opens files from previous versions. Because of some new features, things don't always open exactly like they did before, but all the data should be there. You might need to adjust some settings.

Your profile says you use Finale 2012. When you open a file in 2012 made in a previous version, you should see a message that says your original version will remain untouched. Anotherwords, it's still in the location you used to open it. If you overwrite the original, it's gone unless you have backups in another location.

You might need to add the suffix .musx to the file name to get it to open.

My husband just updated and can't find his files from prior version. I'm asking for him because he is in a panic. I asked him to send the file to me as an attachment and I would try to open it with 2012. It shows .musx but gives me the message that I don't have an application to open it.

Try opening it from within the program.

He had 2014 before and just updated to 2018. I am still using 2012 on my mac. We both have macs. He tried to open the file he was working on before updating and couldn't open it so that is why I suggested sending it to me.

All versions of Finale make backups by default, unless one deliberately turns the feature off. They should be in a folder called "Finale Files". Have your husband do a search of his computer to try to locate the file he wants. Of course, nothing beats knowingly managing your backup files and storing them on a drive off of the computer.
