Save what changes?
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
it is a common occurrence that I open a file to remember what was in it, and upon closing it I am prompted to save the changes. But I make no changes that I am aware of- no window or scroll manipulation- I simply open the file. This does become just a bit annoying.
I have tried disabling various options in Preferences to no avail.

It's been this way ever since I can remember. Somehow they never seem to correct this.

It's very irritating. If you always save, then you're throwing away information about when the file was really modified. But warning about closing an actually-modified file is a useful feature than virtually all software has, and Finale is teaching us to be suspicious of it, which can lead to losing a modification you forgot you made.

It was explained to me over at MM Feature Requests a while ago that Finale opens stuff not readily apparent to the user whenever a file is opened and it interprets this as having changed the file even if the user has made no edits to the file. Thus the alert. Of course, Finale should be smarter than that.

There's a Preferences setting in the Open tab to Clean Up File Data. I thought, once upon a time, that unchecking that would stop the Save File prompt. It didn't. Maybe there's another option I need to uncheck. I might experiment.

This sounds like hand-waving. If Finale were really doing something to the file behind the scenes such as repairing it or cleaning up data, then you'd think if you immediately saved it and re-opened it, it wouldn't have anything to "change" the second time and wouldn't prompt you when closing. But it does.John Ruggero wrote:It was explained to me over at MM Feature Requests a while ago that Finale opens stuff not readily apparent to the user whenever a file is opened and it interprets this as having changed the file even if the user has made no edits to the file.

Yes. This is rather obnoxious if you haven't done anything to the file. I often check to make sure I haven't inadvertently done anything through looking at "Undo/Redo Lists" in the Edit Menu, but that's a bother.

Often, if I'm in a hurry and don't want to inadvertently NOT save something I may forgotten I did, I save a version with a new name, or number tacked on to the name (as simple as File1, File2, or whatever). That way, I at least have an extra backup. Better safe then sorry.

Not just that, but Finale will haunt you with the "Deleted Items Statistics" forevermore. Should Finale clean up properly, I would see I deleted a stave in that dialog the next time I open that particular document. Instead Finale will put up that dialog every single time I open that document with exactly the same, long outdated information. At the very least, this information isn't cleaned up when it is no longer relevant.motet wrote:If Finale were really doing something to the file behind the scenes such as repairing it or cleaning up data, then you'd think if you immediately saved it and re-opened it, it wouldn't have anything to "change" the second time and wouldn't prompt you when closing.
