Blank Notation with Rests: Layer 2

Postby The_Turtle » Thu Jan 31, 2019 2:49 am

Hello,

It seems like both "Blank Notation with Rests: Layer 1" and "Blank Notation with Rests: Layer 4" are both available staff styles, but "Blank Notation with Rests: Layer 2" is not. Is there any way I can create a staff style that performs this exact same function, but instead with Layer 2? Thanks!

For reference, I have Finale v25.

Indeed you can create a custom staff style:

Thank you!

EDIT: I can't seem to figure out how to hide both Layer 2 and Layer 4; Finale says the staff styles are conflicting. How can I get around this?

Are you still talking about {Blank Notation with Rests} ?

Please be more specific.
What, exactly, should display? - and what should be hidden?

The better we understand, the better we can help.

So basically I have an orchestral score with two (relatively independent) flute parts, so they need separate cue notes. I was planning on putting the Flute 1 notes on Layer 1, the Flute 2 notes on Layer 2, the Flute 1 cues on layer 3, and the Flute 2 cues on Layer 4. This way, I can hide layers 3 and 4 in the score using the “Blank Notation with Rests” staff style, I can hide layers 2 and 4 in the Flute 1 part in a similar manner, and hide layers 1 and 3 in the Flute 2 part.

However I cannot figure out how to hide two layers at the same time using the “Blank Notation with Rests” staff style twice (once for each layer), because Finale says the staff styles are conflicting.

You should probably have Flute 1 and Flute 2 on separate staves.

If so, how can I put them on the same staff in the score to save space?

I'm saying you can't have both on the same stave, the way it sounds to me. You're going to have to reduce the page percentage sizing to make more room.

If you could attach a Finale file that has only one page of your score showing the spacing challenges, someone may have some suggestions.

The first page of the score should be attached. Spacing should be fine for the most part, but there's several pages that would be pretty cramped if each part was to have its own staff.

I see what you're trying to do with the Flute cues. I'm not sure if there is a way to accomplish what you want using Linked Parts. If it were me, I'd just extract the Flute 1/2 stave, split into separate parts, and arrange the cues there. In fact, I always extract parts rather than use linked parts–it's a lot easier for parts layouts that are a little more complex than usual.

I took your 1 page of score and tried a possible workaround–see attached. You'll see I added 2 staves for Flute 1 and Flute 2, then copied in and split the original combined stave. Use these 2 staves for the 2 parts, hide them on the score, and use the combined stave for the score. Setting up the cues is no problem. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

By the way, I played back those 4 bars and they got my attention right away. Wanted to hear the rest of the concerto. The mark of good music, as I see it.

What I do is give every instrument their own staff, which would solve this problem and also mean a lot less fooling with layers when you're entering the music. I then combine the two flutes, for example, into a third staff for the conductor's score (there are plug-ins to do this). You can create the conductor's score as a "part" containing only the staves you want, or you can suppress the individual flutes from being included with flags. It seems like it's not too late for you to do something like that here.
