Hi all,

A decision to make...

Option 1: Write out a busy marimba part in full (with repeats written out in full), but also no opportunities for page turns, so the performer must memorize the music.

Option 2: Use repeats such as "9 TIMES" and 4 bar passages with repeats bars, etc, combined with multi-page spreads. Gould says it will be risky in performance. (And I would tend to agree).

What is one to do in this situation?! I am leaning towards Option 1.

Cheers,
Hector.

Asking a musician to memorize a long, busy part sounds pretty risky as well. Pianists are often assisted by page turners–why not consider that possibility?

You can also extend the width of the music stand to allow 4 or even 5 pages to lie flat. The cheapest and easiest solution is to get a piece of thin particle board (called masonite in the US) and cut it to size.
