When I export a midi file from Finale (into Logic Pro), why do the patches not transfer also? For example, I have 25 parts for stage orchestra ranging from woodwinds, brass, rhythm, and strings and when I export the file the tracks are in the correct order in the DAW, but the midi information designates "grand piano" as the patch for each track.

Any ideas?

I export MIDI files to Cubase. When you use VST sounds (ARIA player), the patches aren't preserved. However, if you use "Play Finale through MIDI" with the general MIDI sounds, then all the patches get correctly imported. I assume it would probably be the same with Logic Pro. So the problem is to decide at which point you want to (re-)assign your sounds to your likes ...

Patches in a sample library such as Garritan don't correlate 1-to-1 with patches in the General MIDI spec. So even if the patch information transferred, you wouldn't be getting the sounds you originally had set up in Finale if played back in any other environment. If you have Garritan set up in in your DAW, then you could get away with it, but Finale has no way of knowing what you're going to do with the MIDI file after you export it. The easiest solution is to not include the patch information. Without that information, everything defaults to grand piano rather than air raid siren.

If you're playing Finale through General MIDI, the patch information can be assumed correct in any general MIDI environment and therefore can be transferred with the file without causing a lot of headache.
