Can I ask a style question in this forum? When should I use hairpins and when should I use text expressions like cresc. and dim.? Is it OK to use both in one piece? I am writing piano music. (Finale 26 on Windows 10, though it doesn't matter for this question)

I would look at some published music in your genre and take that as a model.
