Splitting music into layers

I am working with an imported xml orchestral score and the flute parts 1 & 2 are on the same staff. Both are depicted in layer 1. Is there a quick way to move the second flute part into layer 2. For example a keyboard shortcut which allows me to click on the 2nd. Flute notes to move them into layer 2. Or... a way to select the same notes and copy them into layer 2.
