WHat is your practice? Do you leave Finale open forever? Just long periods of time? Do you shut it down after you use it for the day or job or whatever?

I shut down all such programs. It's been my experience that all large programs have some subtle bugs that often only occur in long runs. These often depend on things like small memory leaks. (Modern languages are difficult to write bug-free programs in and even so, the operating systems also have these bugs.) A restart causes caches to be flushed and free-memory to be reset to its start-up structure.

I reboot the computer and modem a few times a month (unless the power company does it for me, in which case I'm just adding a restart; always reboot after power failure.)

I shut the computer down at the end of each day. I've read that Macintosh computers run certain routines upon startup and shutdown which are beneficial. I'm no expert so I'll assume that's the case. I've never noticed problems and I'm on my 4th Macintosh.

I'm reminded of a certain part of my life experience. My parents grew up during the 1920s-30s. At that time, electricafation was still relatively new, 50 years or so. Many old wive's tales became common because of real or perceived dangers surrounding electric power. In our house, when I was a kid, one of the cardinal rules was to always unplug the toaster when not in use. ("You don't want it to start a fire and burn the house down, do you?") I assure everyone that these days I leave the toaster plugged in, ready to go.

I shut down the computer every night. I have a new machine that boots very quickly.

I never walk away and leave Finale running with a file open. Maybe it's like N's toaster--I don't know.

I think everybody is right about shutting down often. But for me I have to go through the silly routine to get Fin 26 to see a printer. It's not hard just a frustration each time. One thing unless it is a new file or I don't happen to remember the last printing session, I have no idea what it's going to print or what printer.

If you have macro software and are into that kind of thing, maybe you could program a macro to set up your printer.

I also shut down every night and when I leave the house.

FWIW. My understanding is that running a Mac every now and then in safe mode is beneficial because safe mode on a Mac clears various caches that aren't ordinarily cleared. I don't know which caches safe mode clears. But when I run my iMac in safe mode, startup takes longer, which suggests that it is cleaning things up. So every now and then, I run safe mode.
