In the attached score, I have ONE word that needs a word extension but which doesn't have one. It's in mm. 25-26, on the second syllable of "ruedas". I do have Use Smart Word Extensions selected, and they appear everywhere else that they are needed.

If I try adjusting with "Adjust Word Extensions" in the Lyrics tool, then a word extension that cuts through all of the lyrics on the remainder of p. 19 appears, and obviously that is worse than no extension at all.

Can anyone see what is wrong and suggest how I can fix it?

Many thanks!

Mark

There looks to be a file extension in m. 26 but it's a red smart-shape line--was that added by hand? Measure 43 is missing an extension as well.

This looks to have been created in an ancient version of Finale. If you make a new file and copy the old one it, the word extension works, but that of course means you'll have to reformat things.

When I open your file, Smart Word Extensions is not checked. Anyway, this appears to be based on a file from Finale 97. Often old files behave differently from years of changes in Finale.

Having said all that, the real cause is found with the Measure Tool. Double click that measure (25) and you'll see that Measure Attributes has the option selected to break Smart Word Extensions. Try unchecking that option.

I tried that but it didn't seem to fix anything.

This is very mysterious to me (perhaps not to you techno-wizard people). I am looking at the very file I attached here, and there is no red smart-shape line in m. 26 (but I had added one at some point and then deleted it within in the last few days when I realized what it was), and m. 43 has an extension line. There seem to be ghosts of earlier saved versions of this file. Strange!

Color me baffled. Mark's file had a smart line under the continuation in measure 26. If I delete that and clear word-extension measure attributes, the word extension from the previous bar can't be dragged down, nor can trying to do it in scroll view--the line just goes into the margin. But in Zuill's file it's fine, a real word extension.

43 is missing an extension from the previous bar when I look at Mark's file, but is there in Zuill's. The "extensions" at the beginning of 48 and 84 are actually smart lines in both files.

Motet,

Sorry. In my revised file, I only fixed the occurrence mentioned in the original post. I have now revised my revision of the file to get rid of those other 2 Smart Lines.

Thank you, Zuill. I really don't understand this, as I had removed those Smart Lines before I sent the file with this question. So strange! But I am downloading yours, in case they mysteriously come back.

I finally found "Use smart word extensions," which is what I missed in the discussion above. (Why would someone want dumb word extensions?)

This file was created in a version before Smart Word Extensions were created, so that option was not checked.

My questions is, why is it an option now instead of automatically on? But I don't know what else it does besides jump across system breaks.

In the default file, it is on. However, for files created before that feature was introduced, opening those files in the newer versions of Finale automatically have that option not selected. I believe that is appropriate, as, in the old method, one could create extensions where desired, but where they weren't desired, there would be no extensions. If opening these files in newer versions would automatically make the option selected, that would then place extensions where they were not wanted.
