Measure #s in hidden staves
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello all,
I've been finding ways around this with various duct tape-and-super glue solutions for ages, but...this next project is going to be too long to do it efficiently.
I am working on a transcription of a Joe Schwantner piece. I want to emulate Joe's earlier days of open scoring...to do that, I am using the "Force Hide Staff" staff style. I also put measure numbers at the bottom of the score...the problem occurs when I have to hide the bottommost staff, because the numbers disappear with it.
You'd think that simply re-checking "Items to Display/Measure Numbers" in the staff style might help, but alas, it does not.
Does anyone know why this behaviour does not work? Is it something else preventing the measure numbers from showing up, or is this a bug I should report to Make Music?
Any easy work-arounds? What I *have* been doing is allowing measure numbers to appear on other staves (usually, I just have it checked to be on the bottom staff), and then I have to go through, move the measure numbers down to match the bottom numbers, and hide ALL the other numbers. It's a pain, and doubly so for this piece since it will be over 100 pages.

With the Measure Tool, Option-Click under one of the measures (above the hidden staff) where you would like the number to appear. See it now?

Nothing is happening. Even when I select the hidden numbers with the measure tool and select "Always Show Number," the number still disappears after a moment.

There is an easier way. In the measure number region setting, pick "Show On: Bottom Staff." If you then hide the bottom staff, the measure number will be on the next staff up--which ever is the bottom staff in that system.

That works for hiding the staff using the Staff Tool, not hiding using the Staff Style. In the latter way, the numbers appear but then disappear when the screen in redrawn.motet wrote:There is an easier way. In the measure number region setting, pick "Show On: Bottom Staff." Speaking of which Nikk, I think the answer is to hide the last stave of the score with the Staff Tool (Staff Menu > Hide Empty Staves) rather than the hide Staff Style. As Motet suggests, that way the numbers appear at all times.

That works great, except in a case where not all the measures are empty, as attached. I'm using a combination of a new staff style and an old, and will eventually go back and have to add measure numbers for that first measure in each system if it is hidden.N Grossingink wrote:That works for hiding the staff using the Staff Tool, not hiding using the Staff Style. I created a staff style that hides everything except measure numbers. The only problem is that it creates an issue with the staff bracket on the extreme left, so I can't use it for the first measure in a system...I will likely try your solution for those.motet wrote:I see. How are you getting the others (e.g., 30) to appear?
Depending on what's hidden where, I guess you could attach the numbers to the penultimate staff with a big vertical offset.

If you have to add the measure numbers manually at the begining of systems, the "measure number" rehearsal mark, adjusted to look and be placed how you want, might be easiest. You can assign it to a metatool and just click it in.
Oooh....that is a GOOD idea.motet wrote:If you have to add the measure numbers manually at the begining of systems, the "measure number" rehearsal mark, adjusted to look and be placed how you want, might be easiest. You can assign it to a metatool and just click it in.
