I know this is slightly OT but I'm trying to set up Metagrid on an iPad to use with Finale. The instructions and tutorials are incomplete about how to do this with a program the makers haven't already set up. Is there anyone who has succeeded in setting up Metagrid with Finale and could steer me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I only took a quick look at Metagrid, so a more informed advice would be helpful.
From what I understood (I had an exchange with their tech support), Metagrid can only trigger keyboard shortcuts. It won't be able to activate menu items if they don't have one (there are many in Finale : Transpose, Show Active Layer Only, Display in Concert Pitch, etc...).
If System Preferences or Keyboard Maestro (on the Mac) is used to define more shortcuts, maybe Metagrid could be useful.
Triggering actions via midi in Finale is also very limited, another thing on which Metagrid often relies on.

A friend taught me this weekend about this. The answer is, using Midi Note On messages with Metagrid, which are translated into any number of key commands/mouse movements/whatever you want in another piece of software. Im using Bome MIDI Translator. Cheers

I don't quite understand. If this can be used to emulate keystrokes or mouse movements, this can all be done with a macro program like Keyboard Maestro very easily. So what's the advantage of using Metagrid?

I don't know what Metagrid is, but I use Bome's MIDI Translator extensively for music entry. I've mapped all sorts of functions to the lowest octave of the keyboard so I can do most entry without taking my hands from the MIDI keyboard.

Code: Select all

C2 tie
C#2 sixty-fourth note
C#2+Shift/Alt	append rests, sixty-fourth note (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
D2 sixteenth note
D2+Shift/Alt	append rests, sixteenth note (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
Shift+D2	sixteenth grace note
D#2 thirty-second note
D#2+Shift/Alt	append rests, thirty-seconds (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
Shift+D#2	thirty-second grace note
E2 eighth note
E2+Shift/Alt	append rests, eighths (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
Shift+E2	eighth grace note
Tuplet+E2	eighth duplet
F2 quarter note
F2+Shift/Alt	append rests, quarters (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
Shift+F2	bass transposition (down two octaves)
Alt+F2 transpose down another octave
Tuplet+F2	quarter+eight triplet
F#2 triplet; Tuplet Shift
Shift+F#2	cancel triplet
Alt+F#2 tenor transposition (down one octave)
G2 half note
G2+Shift/Alt	append rests, halves (Shift=1 rest, Alt=2 rests)
Shift+G2	whole note
Tuplet+G2	half + quarter triplet
G#2 enharmonic change
Shift+G#2	courtesy accidental
Alt+G#2 toggle check for extra notes and jump to next measure
A2 dot
Shift+A2	C to A transposition (up a minor third)
Alt+A2 A to C transposition (down a minor third)
A#2 break beam
Shift+A#2	C to Bb transposition (up a whole step)
Alt+A#2 Bb to C transposition (down a whole step)
B2 back (left arrow)
Shift+B2	transpose down another half step
Alt+B2 favor flats
C3 next measure
Shift+C3	transpose up another half step
Alt+C3 favor sharps
C#3 undo
Shift+C#3	no transposition
Alt+C#3 use spelling tables
Alt+D3 use default spelling
D3 Shift
D#3 Alt

Metagrid lets you create 'buttons' on your iPad that trigger actions on your Mac. So instead of having to remember that CTRL-Alt-Shift-F4 is ... whatever, you can have a little button with text or an icon on it that you tap on your iPad.
