custom time signature

Post by rjawad1 » Sat Jun 01, 2019 4:05 pm

Hello,
I have a section of music where the 8th note is constant but there aren't a set number of them in each measure. I know that to input into finale, I will need to change the meter of each measure. However, for the performer, I just want to show x over 8 for the meter for the whole section. Is there a way to do this?
Thank you,
--Ryan

I understand that you want one time signature at the beginning, showing X over 8.
1) Document -> Document Options -> Time Signature : for the top symbol (score & parts), enter a huge vertical value which will expel the top number out of the page.

(Inconvenient : this will apply to the whole score)

2) Create an expression for X and place it in the score as the numerator.

3) In the measure tool, for each measure which brings a new time signature, select Time Signature -> Never show.

If you need regular numerators elsewhere in the score/parts, you may have to enter them as expressions, too.

Thanks for the workaround. Yes, unfortunately, I need regular time signatures elsewhere in the piece, and there are quite a few time signature changes. I'll have to think of something else. Finale, so far for me, has been very customizable. Too bad it comes up short here.

Enter numerator and denominator as expressions. Easy to do. Use Maestro 24 for the denominator. Use the measure spacing handle to add some extra space at the beginning for the time signature.

Probably you've got this already, but motet's good advice needs hiding the time signature in all measures in x/8. (In Measure Tool you can select all the measures needed and then check the time signature not to show.)
