Grace note spacing with busy rhythms
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I'm currently working on a collection of snare solos. Lots of 16ths, sextuplets, etc. The grace notes are spacing closer to the previous notes than the ones they're leading into.
Is there a spacing option that can fix this without having to manually adjust all grace notes?

It sounds like there is too much material on each system. You can widen the spacing widths by going to Document Options > Music Spacing > Click the Spacing Widths button. Change the reference width to 5 spaces - you might have to try a wider or narrower width depending.

That may be the case, but the default grace note placement is too far away from the following note in my opinion (as bopeuph says, closer to the preceding note):
Shortening "Graced note offset on entry" helps:

Thanks. I actually just halved the value before the answer, and it seemed pretty good. The offset entry was .08333, I set it at .04, which it rounded off to .04167 (never been sure why Finale can't do specific measurements, but I digress).
Either way, it looks much better. Thanks!

Finale's basic unit of measurement, the EVPU, is a quarter of a point, or 1/288". Most of the time, when you set something in inches, it rounds to the nearest EVPU. So you have changed it from 24 EVPUs to 12. There are a few things that can be expressed in fractions of an EVPU, but this isn't one of them.

Of course--that may be the default. You can enter something in EVPUs anyway by appending an "e". For example, if you decide you want to make the grace notes even closer, you can enter "8e" even though your units are set to inches.
