Ties Between Notes Different Laers

I'm transcribing (just to hear it) a toccata by Merulo. He ha a place where there are tied notes in different voices (I can play this on a keyboard instrument so it makes sense). The particular case is easy to describe: halfnote F+A and halfnote D+F in the same 2/2 measure. The upper notes belong to one voice and the lower to another. Merulo ties the two F's with each semi-chord having the upper note's stems going upward and the lower note's stems downward. I can get the visual but not simultaneous sounding (without using hidden notes). I was wondering if there were a way to do this. I think Finale cannot tie notes in two layers (after layers are for independent lines.) It's not high priority as I only want to hear the piece. It's a weird piece in that each pair of measures alternates two F chords with two C chords. FFCCFFCCFFCC.... all the way down. It also has 32nd notes and whole notes (or demisemiquavers and semibreves, not many unmodified names here.)

Have you tried using voices instead of layers?

This is where you can use voices, rather than layers. (At least, I think so. I’ve heard it described, but never had to do it.) Look up voices in the user manual.

I'll give it a try. (It's only one or two measures.)

If I could see the original document, I might be able to give more specific advice. Which toccata is it?

It's in Apel's "Historical Anthology of Music" (older stuff) page 168 (Piece 153). It's also in Apel's "Masters of the Keyboard."

I "fixed" the problem for my version by letting the voices cross for that one note. The whole thing's sort of a borderline case. I found it interesting because I hadn't thought of tying acoss voices (seems musically irrelevant).

For those of us who don't own the Apel books, what is the full title of the piece? So as to try to find another source.

Just because it's in HAM doesn't necessarily mean it's well-notated.

The book (Historical Anthology of Music) can be viewed online in pdf format.

I have attached a file in which I duplicated the notation 2 ways.

Nice. Thanks.

(I couldn't get the voices to work as I couldn't get speedy entry to work. Probably some setting I have.)

One month's curiosity is next month's technique.
