My palettes keep moving around the page when I move from file to file. Anyone know how I can keep them in the original position?

After you've moved them, go to File Menu > Save Preferences. If that doesn't work, your preferences may be corrupt and in need of regeneration. Go here:

I don't know about the Mac, but on Windows they can move around when the window loses focus, computer sleeps, etc.

How do you pick and choose which palettes you want and don't to appear automatically every time you open the application?

With the Window pull-down menu. I believe it just remembers which were last open and where. There are also a couple of palette options in Preferences.

BINGO! Little did I know I had "Close subsidiary palettes when leaving tool" checked off!
