How do I get lyrics to insert above a staff?

In the Lyrics tool you should see a graphic on the left side of the staff. Drag the left-most of those triangles up with the mouse.

If most of your lyrics are below the staff as usual and you need just a few above the staff to account for varying rhythms:

In the Lyrics Menu, select "Specify Current Lyric…" and change from Verse to Chorus (or Section). As Motet describes, move the baseline triangle above the staff as desired. Enter the lyrics. Switch back to "Verse" when needed for the "main" lyrics.
