If I set the document spacing option "avoid collision of unisons" to "none," I still get the result in measure 1 below. If I use voices, I get measure 2, which I want (after blanking the eighth notehead), but the rests aren't there.
I can work around it. I'm mainly curious what collision of unisons mean and why changing the document option doesn't affect measure 1.
Collision of unisons?

I get the same result, but if you respace the measure with Manual Spacing set to "Clear", the noteheads overlap.

If you remember the bug involving off-setting of 2nds, then this should not seem so strange. In the 2nds bug, if you change the note to another interval (say a 3rd), the offset remains. I usually go to Special Tools and, after selecting the handle in the Note Position Tool, press Backspace, thus clearing the offset that Finale failed to clear when the interval changed.

I see what you mean. If I change the setting before inputting the music, then the noteheads overlap as they should. What's odd is that these spacing rules seem to stick to the note rather than being reassessed each time. Seems like the wrong way implement it.
