When I try to place a note in a measure that already has a note in it followed by one or more rests I succeed only if I have been working on that measure and the note in it is highlighted. What is the reasoning that prevents me from placing a note anywhere that it only replaces a rest?

Thank you for your help.

I highly recommend you do the tutorials.
It sounds to me as though you aren't understanding some of the very basic ways in which Finale works.

Answering your question here won't help, because it will simply lead to more questions and more confusion for you.
Really, the tutorials are your best bet.
Finale is a difficult program to learn, but the basics are all in the tutorials.

Jim,

Give the exact steps that you are taking to place a note. It sounds like you are successful in changing a rest to a note, but you can't place a note in a measure that is already full.

This will prevent measure from filling with rests.

Or, delete what you don't want first.

I'm not a Simple Entry expert, but I think to insert a note between two others you need to pick the duration from the palette and click it in.

Speedy entry will insert before or replace depending on the state of the Insert toggle.

Motet,

Please let me know where I can find the Insert Toggle.

I don't know what the key is on the Mac, but pull down the Speedy menu and you'll see "Insert notes or rests," which you want to check to insert. Perhaps it will show which key that's mapped to as well. (On Windows it's the Insert key and it toggles the option on and off.) You could also look up "keyboard shortcuts" in the manual.

Motet,

Thank you for this information. It works a little differently on a Mac, but it is wonderful.
