Ghost note spacing?

Finale 26 Windows 7

Anyone have any ideas about what's going on here, and a simple way of fixing it other than manually re-entering the notes? Just curious.

There seem to duplicate measure spacing alottments for single notes. I've no idea how I managed this.

Thanks.

It's called the "beat chart." I don't know the answer to your question, but your music is misaligned vertically (e.g. beats 3 and 4) so that may have something to do with it. Don't worry about creating pretty spacing in the score using the Note Position tool. Things are supposed to align vertically and that sometimes makes the individual staves look odd, but the parts won't look like that. Have a look a professionally printed score.

But I never manually altered any of the spacing in this document. This project is way too huge for that. So I've been working with Finale's default spacings, including here. So again, I have no idea how this happened. But note that between the flute and first clarinet, there's a complete duplicate / alternate set of beat spacings.

Second clarinet is messed up.

Maybe try Document options / Music spacing / Manual positioning: Clear

and respace. You could try it on that one measure. Don't forget to put Manual positioning back afterwards.

Not sure if this is what happened in your example, but if a person has just one (or a few staves) selected and (accidentally) activates Music Spacing (e.g., Ctrl+4) the spacing is controlled only by the selected music rather than taking account of all the music in the system.

But vertical alignment is still maintained in that situation.

I recently copied a measure with triplets from one place to another and hidden entries were introduced that were hard to discover and hard to deal with until I went into the Speedy Edit Frame, and removed them one at a time. Until then, Speedy Entry kept telling me that the measure had too many beats. Visually, that was not the case. It was these hidden entries that were causing the problem. I had never seen this before.

So, I would be glad to troubleshoot the file if necessary to find the culprit, if needed. Just the one measure at issue would be all I would need.

Go to Document Options > Music Spacing. Make sure "Avoid Collision of Hidden Objects" is unchecked. (???)

I might not have been clear. I was not talking about hidden notes. I was talking about some items that were not hidden notes, but mysterious entries that I had not entered. Some how, the measure got corrupted. However, once I found these items in the Speedy Edit Frame, and deleted them, all was well.

Did they make alignment insistent, like in the picture?

That was one of the problems. Attaching lyrics was another issue. I kept having to press the spacebar to get to the next syllable. Quite odd.

Still haven't solved this problem. Here's the document, see page 18. Any help via response is greatly appreciated.

Yes, quite. When I opened your file, ewindels, and deleted two hidden "items" in the measure in question (and applied music spacing) all was well.

As I said back in August, the second clarinet has some extra junk 3 before [199]. In Speedy entry, move the cursor along until it stops where it's not over a note or rest and press Delete (or Mac equivalent). Keep doing this until you've removed them all. This extra junk is both before and after the second tuplet. Turn on "check for extra notes" (and maybe leave it on from now on) to make sure you've got them all. Do that and the spacing problems go away.

EDIT: Anders beat me to it.
