I am having difficulty interpreting the instructions to make playback increase or decrease loudness gradually over an interval of time. I can pull up the smart shapes collection of icons but that is as far as I get.
I would appreciate an explanation in your own words. The words I have read haven't worked.
Thank you for your help.

Human Playback automatically interprets hairpins, if that is what you are using. I don't know that you can have specific control over how Human Playback realizes the changes.

I assume you have gone the additional step of actually entering the hairpins. Is Human Playback turned on? If so, it will work as expected. Why don't you attach a Finale file so someone can take a look. Just the measures in question will be enough.jamesadrian wrote:I can pull up the smart shapes collection of icons but that is as far as I get.

Hairpins work better in playback if they end with a dynamic expression. Because - only then - the human playback knows the proper end volume and the gradual change before. If you don't want to see the dynamic expression in the score, use a dynamic expression with a hidden font.

and you can hide expressions on a case-by-case basis.
In Windows it's Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H (all the modifier keys in one shot, plus the letter H)

the standard interpretation is supposed to be:
hairpin swell without dynamic at mid point means 1 level change (ie: p - mp, or mp - mf).
hairpin swell WITH dynamic goes to target then returns to point of origin.
so HP is, in fact, interpreting it correctly.

I have no human playback settings set.
I don't know how to hide settings or why I should.
I don't know which menu to go to first or what to click on.
I want to make the playback vary in loudness.
Maybe somebody is willing to start at the beginning.
Thank you for your help.

First of all, make sure Human Playback is on. HP is what interprets and plays back the hairpins. It's under the MIDI/Audio menu as pictured below.
