What is the process of using Aruvarb's lines? I can't figure out how to access them w/ the custom line tool but surely there is a way. I can't imagine this document is suggesting copying and pasting a bunch of symbols in a row...I imagine these line segments (vibratos, squiggles, sawtooth waves etc see attached) could be placed and dragged out to different lengths w/ a line tool somehow.

You can create a custom smart line in which a character is replicated. Read up on it in the manual.
