Hi,

I'm not getting any multimeasure rests in my linked parts. Here are my settings, attached.

Is there anyone who has a hotkey setup for "create multimeasure rest" ? How do I set that up?

Also, I'd like the multimeasure rests to match phrase lengths and other things. It would be best if I could indicate where they should stop and start while looking at the score / operating on the score, because I cannot remember where the phrases etc are when editing a part. Is there any way to deal with that?

Thank you!

If you put a rehearsal mark (number, letter) at the beginning of each phrase, Finale will automatically start a MM rest at that point, or end one at that point. As to why you have no MM rests showing, I don't know. If you go to the Edit Menu, go down to MM Rests > Create for score or part. That will force them to appear. Do this after you add the rehearsal marks.

N, slipped in, but here was my reply:

I don't know why you're not getting rests in the parts. You can create them manually by selecting everything (or the measures where you want rests) from the Selection tool, right-clicking, and selecting Multimeasure rests/Create.

If you have put "real" whole rests in your measures (as opposed to the default empty-measure rests), that will block multimeasure rests. There's a plug-in which will undo that.

If you want to break multimeasure rests where phrases begin, use the measure tool on the last measure of the phrase and check the "break a multimeasure rest" flag.

Hey N! Yes, that works great! Didn't know about the Edit Menu->MM Rests! Seems like we have settings for that all over the place. That also worked great after sprinkling in the rehearsal marks!

Awesome buddy!

Hey Motet,

In the Measure tool, I tried adding "Create MM Rest-> Break" to the top line of the score. Then did Edit->Create MM rests->[all parts and not the score]. This did not break the MM rest in the parts. Did I misunderstand your suggestion?

I guess so--I'm not sure what "Create MM Rest-> Break" is.

With the Measure Tool, double-click on the measure where you would like the multimeasure rest to end. Check the option as shown below. This will affect all parts.

Hey M,

OK, I was doing this, which didn't work.

MichaelGlennWilliams,

The command
Multimeasure rests > Break
will break all multimeasure rests in the selected region of the score/part you are currently viewing.

In Other Words:
- first select a region,
- then run Multimeasure Rests > Break.

That will remove a multimeasure rest, not split one in two. "Break" is perhaps misleading.

Hi Peter, what does it mean to break a multimeasure rest in the score exactly? You can see I have a one measure region selected.

A multimeasure rest is {multiple measures displaying as a single measure}.
You can see a multimeasure rest in Page View, but never in Scroll View.
You will always see the individual measures in Scroll View.

To break a multimeasure rest means to break the multimeasure rest up into its individual measures, so that Page View looks like Scroll View.

Normally you use multimeasure rests in the parts, but not in the score.

Hi, so my multimmeasure rests are appearing ok in the parts now that I used the Edit->Create Multimeasure rests.
Then, I used the Measure tool-> Edit Range

I only have one range. I turned on display measure numbers on every 1 measures, and also turned on display measure numbers for multimeasure rests.
measure number range linked parts.png
Then I also turned off Hide Measure Numbers for the rehearsal marks

However I'm still not getting measure numbers above the staff at the start of every multimeasure rest, eg m42 and m 57:

If I understand you correctly, the issue here is the position; should be above the staff, and at the beginning of the measure, right?

What happens if you adjust the settings for the Position?

Also, attach a (small) Finale sample document here for the gurus to examine.
Finding the culprit is so much easier if you have the actual Finale document, rather than just some screen shots.

You don't really have to have a measure number above the staff at the start of a MM Rest. The number is already present as the first of the MM Rest range, as in "42-54".

Yes, but the conductor and librarian want this!
