Quick question, folks,
The download of the update to Finale 26.2 as described on the MM page seems not allow you to save it before asking if you want to install it, so instead I went through my account at MM and downloaded the update as a zip file that I could save on my computer.

Could someone remind me, please: If I install the update (whether through the zip file or through the more "direct" MM page), will this write over all my preferences and other user modifications, or does that happen only with a paid upgrade. Sorry, I forgot if there was a difference. I am downloading it at work to take advantage of faster download speeds, but if I install it in either of the two ways above, I want to make sure I don't have to spend the typical 3-4 hours getting the program back to the way I like to use it while at work.

Thanks,
Perotinus

I'm guessing it will replace your preferences, but it's only a guess.

What browser are you using? Saving versus running a file you're downloading should be a browser choice. If you're using Internet Explorer, try a different browser.

Thanks, motet,
That's the thing. The links in the email from MM advising me of the update (not the MM "page" as I said before -- pardon me), these have me go through the "Help" menu --> "Check for update," not through my browser. That's what I first chose, and that's what apparently skips the usual "do you want to save (or whatever) ...? " stage. Hence I instead went to my account via my browser and saved it as a zip file.

Thanks for the opinion about whether it might overwrite everything. I am glad I didn't install it via the Help menu option above, or I'd be sunk until I had time to whip into what I want.
Cheers,
Perotinus

There's a good chance they haven't changed the format of the Preferences file, since this doesn't seem like much of an update. You could try saving the older one and then putting it back and see if things seem OK. Or, compare old and new, if you have technical computer skills.

Thanks, motet, I hope it will be less destructive.
I will soon find out for sure, and at a time when I can devote what I may need to do with it. And, thank you, you reminded me to make a copy of my modified Finale.ini before updating!

I downloaded the stand-alone update file. But then, I decided to update to v26.2 right in Finale. My preferences appear to be exactly as they were before the update. I can't say anyone else will have the same result. For me, all is well.

When has an incremental update ever overwritten the Preferences? Anyway didn’t happen here.

Mac users running High Sierra or later can reset to an earlier state within the last 24 hours using APFS Snapshots. If the new install messes things up, you can roll back an hour or two. Same as a complete restore from backup except it takes a coupe minutes instead of many hours.

I discovered this by accident a year and a half ago and it’s saved my butt a few times.

I just upgraded Finale and upgraded my OS to Catalina on my non-essential computer and at first glance it does not appear that prefs were deleted.

It looks like an almost 'do nothing' update to me. Windows folks may want to skip this one if they think issues will happen.

Apparently v26.1 broke Document Options regarding Tie Ends (see the thread on that), and v26.2 didn't fix that. I believe, until today, MakeMusic was not aware of the broken condition. So, if anybody is still on v26, then definitely delay "updating" to v.26.2. I know that Mac users need the update in order to update the OS. But Windows users should hold off.

Okay, if you read my posts in the thread about ties being off, I looked at my pdfs created in v26.1 and all the ties are fine. That's why I didn't notice a problem until I was alerted to it in that thread just one day after I "updated". In their attempt to overhaul the code, the slot for Horizontal Tie End for Under/Outer/Note is non-functioning. The program does not recognize the setting as is or does not recognize any change made there. I wonder what else will come out with v26.2. This might be the tip of the iceberg. This s a Program malfunction and not document specific.

So, updaters beware!

Another bug: Keep Current for Grace Note Spacing in Document Options is broken. It is ignored. New v26.2 bug. OUCH!

Zuill

P.S.: I just started a ticket about this with MakeMusic. Please, report your findings here so we can get these new bugs (things that worked just a day ago) fixed ASAP!

P.P.S.: One would think that, if something got broken with the code, just look back at the v26.1 code and make it match. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about, but if it is easy to break, it should be easy to fix. So, far, these to Bugs weren't there until v26.2, and both have worked properly for many, many years. What happened?

I'm talking about 2 HUGE features that worked yesterday, but not today. They have worked as expected for years, and now don't. This is not exactly the same as usual expectations. They can also not promote backwards compatibility, or any compatibility with other versions, as these 2 items (and maybe more) make the files broken in v26.2, but not in v25. If someone wants to open a v25 file in v26.2, they will be quite surprised, and I'm sure very angry.

I'm hoping to hear back from support tomorrow. What I probably need to do is roll back to v26.1. However, I also want to keep testing v26.2. maybe I need to just work in v25 until things get sorted out. I hope they drop the "compatibility with v25" statement until this gets fixed, because that's false advertising.

Good news. I just heard from MakeMusic (David Cusick) and both issues that I have been reporting are scheduled for a Hot Fix release in very short order. Good news to hear that. Wow. MakeMusic is making some positive improvements in caring for the flagship product.

According to the Release Notes, they've done lots of underlying work to the way that Document Options are implemented: the code for setting, storing and modifying these values might have been entirely rewritten. Replacing it with the code that they are trying to remove would achieve nothing and may even no longer work if the old code relies on data structures that are no longer there.

Well, I made those statements before I had heard back from David Cusick. I also had asked if I should reinstall v26.1. I was told not to go through all the trouble, as the fix release would be coming out very soon. So, obviously, they are able to find the way to fix both of the reported issues that v26.2 broke, and they are correctable in short order.

So, they're able to fix the tie-end bug in "short order" along with the grace note bug, but I've been kludging grace notes in voiced linked parts for TWELVE years now after they broke it?

I think the operating procedure is if they don't fix it IMMEDIATELY then it's going to be broken forever.

Fixing long-standing issues is entirely another matter. I, too have a long list of complaints that I have yet to see fixed.

The 2 issues at hand are things that worked perfectly fine in v26.1, and then, with the ongoing code upgrading and cleaning, got broken in v26.2. These issues are simple a matter that the program is ignoring settings that are in any document (not document specific) and thus documents work fine in v25.5 and v26.1, but now not in v26.2. Since people have many documents that now, all of a sudden, don't behave properly, this is an urgent situation for MakeMusic. Otherwise, if they can't fix it, they will be forced to take the v26.2 update off the website. This will be disastrous to Mac users who were now told to upgrade the Mac OS. They will be in deep trouble. Windows users, can simply go back to v26.1 if needed, without the OS concern.
