I've got a custom smart shape which I'm having problems positioning. It's a thick horizontal line with an arrow. In the screen shot it starts on the barline. But I want it to start before the barline, touching the box. When I manually drag it into the position I want, then when I do an update layout, it moves back to this position.
Any ideas? Jeff

You need to construct the box from smart shapes, too. Then extend the arrow line to the left so that its starting point is in the same measure and at the same position as the boxes' right border line.
If Update Layout then changes the measure's width, both smart shapes will stay attached.

No independent time signatures here. Auto update layout is on, auto-music spacing is off. So the measure width is not changing. I tried unchecking "snap to beats" in the smart shape tool. Yet it keeps snapping back to beat 1. When I delete this smart shape and re-enter it, making sure I start this smart shape in the measure with the box, it still snaps to beat 1 in the next measure. Very frustrating.

Here's a file, FInale 26. I stripped out enough of it to keep the composer happy. The problematic measure is on page 2, system 5. I'm curious as to what you can find.

I tried Motet's approach with no success. I opened the file in 26, 25, and 14.5 with the same errant behavior. I will have to look more deeply to see what's up.

Eureka! Success at last. You had an extra hidden eighth rest in the measure with the septuplet, following the last quarter note. Once that was deleted, all seemed to work well. The box now needs to be resized, however, as deleting the rest extended the right side. If you need extra space on the right side of the measure, that can be accomplished at least 2 other ways. Just let us know and we might make some suggestions.

I think the key to my success was starting in the measure to the right of the box, not the measure with the box. Then the endpoints can be adjusted without a problem. You can see in the picture I posted where the endpoint is anchored.

Even doing it that way, the end point moves upon redraw. After deleting the rest, there's no endpoint move after redraw.

When I move the end handle, the anchor point changes. If I hold shift-alt, then the anchor point remains the same, and the end doesn't move. I had forgotten about using modifier keys. Maybe you have your system set up to do his automatically. In preferences, shift is one choice, alt the other. I guess using both together is documented elsewhere.

Yes, I have "Anchor attachment indicator lines when dragging or nudging items (press Alt to temporarily disable)" checked. That explains it.
(Kind of an odd way to put it. It's the attachment point that's anchored, not the indicator lines.)

And, after testing, I guess it's just the alt needed in my case, as I have that option unchecked in preferences. Using alt allows mouse dragging. However, using the arrows to nudge does not allow going past the barline. Odd.
