Nope.
the free version is incredibly limited. it looks even more limited than Finale's Notepad (or whatever it was called) was.

"write beautifully engraved music for two instruments".

You could copy some of the Kodály Duo for Violin and Cello. At least your time learning the very basics of Dorico would be pleasantly spent.

At the very least, with SE you can open, play**, export xml/midi, and print any Dorico document, so might be useful to any Finale user who gets sent a Dorico document.

If the free version is too limited for you: there's currently 30% off Dorico Elements (the paid-for cut-down version) and off a crossgrade from Finale to Dorico Pro.
Dorico Elements is reduced to £60; and a Finale crossgrade to Dorico Pro is £168 using voucher JANSALE30 before this Thursday! (Probably similar € and $ values.)

**You get Steinberg's HALion SE sound library thrown in with the free version.

If nothing else, Dorico's three-tier product line may encourage Finale to bring back NotePad and PrintMusic.

Dorico is interesting in this respect. There is only one Dorico app in existence - the full version. It's the particular license that a user owns that allows or locks one out of more advanced features. You'd think that Make Music could approach it the same way. Of course, I know we're talking about Make Music. They're "special".

No matter how much I complain about Finale, I will never change to another notation program. I'm too setin my ways!

Notepad could do that With Finale files. Playback was general MIDI only. Sibelius has its own viewer.

I think that MM is missing an opportunity by no longer offering a free player. Perhaps Dorico SE will shake something loose.
