Sometimes when I open a 25.5 file for the first time, it looks like this:
Closing it and opening restores it to normal. Anyone else experiencing this and/or know what is going on?

John, I doubt that this would be of any help, but I was thinking of the tools that place handles in unusual or 'irregular' places: Special Tools, and Text Tool. You wouldn't happen to have a lot of empty, discarded text blocks on the page by any chance?
When I see handles that shouldn't be there, usually it's enough to scroll the page a little bit up and down to make them disappear.

There are no artifacts or anything like that. These are the legitimate articulation handles that are all in the wrong place on the screen when the file first opens. the handles don't go where they belong until I close and then reopen the file:

“half baked?”
Really, motet, how can you imply that Finale would ever introduce a new feature without subjecting it to the most rigorous and in-depth testing and analysis? <tongue firmly in cheek>
John, do Redraw Screen or Update Layout have any effect?

Hi Mike, great idea. I need to try that next time it happens.
I have also noticed similar disassociation issues with text blocks. All of sudden the cursor doesn't appear where I click in the block but somewhere outside of it. Yet the editing proceeds as if the cursor were where it would be expected. HIghlighting of individual words is normal, however.

That and the fact that it seems to break old files, or at least complicate things. I have been reluctant to upgrade, but perhaps I should research it.
I often have handles persist when I switch to the Selection tool. I'm used to typing Ctrl-D in that situation. But I'm on Windows; I'm guessing this is platform-related.

Instead of clicking in the text block, try this:John Ruggero wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 7:40 pm… I have also noticed similar disassociation issues with text blocks. All of sudden the cursor doesn't appear where I click in the block but somewhere outside of it …
While the text block is selected, go to
Text menu > Edit Text…

Thanks, Peter. I will try that.
Motet, I don't ever have handles persist so you may be right about the platform.
And I am using 25.5 so my articulations are stacked the old fashioned way.
Other ideas about the original issue? Hope it isn't my relatively new Mac. I haven't seen anything like it with other apps.

Another shot in the dark: When I've experienced really strange displacements of various and unexpected elements it was solved by checking Display Actual Measure Numbers in Preferences > View. Probably you know this already.
Have you tried scrolling down and up? It usually works for me, but then I'm on Windows.

Thanks, Anders. No, I didn't know about the measure numbers; or if I did, I forgot it long ago. That is another one to try. You would think I would have tried scrolling, but I couldn't swear to it. Now I am actually looking forward to it happening so I can try all the suggestions! But it only seems to happen first thing, so that will be tomorrow.

I had another wild idea, perhaps of no help to you, John, but it possibly might give someone an inkling as to what's going on.
I have a vague memory of seeing handles that shouldn't be there when I used an older document as a template for a new one - i.e. 'ghost handles' somehow 'visiting' the new document. If this sounds weird, I think the issue itself is quite weird too. It shouldn't happen really.

Didn't happen today, wouldn't you know it.
Thanks, BuonTempi, I thought that it might have to do with opening a file too soon before Finale is completely open. But I just tried that and there was no problem when I clicked on the file immediately after starting Finale.
Anders, I use a template that was created several years ago from scratch, so I don't think that is it. Yes, it is weird, that's for sure.

"It" happened again today and I tried all of the suggestions above. None worked (except Peter's regarding the text block, which I tried yesterday, but decided I preferred to stay in the editing frame on the page.)
The file opened and the dynamics jumped around crazily when I tried to edit them. Switched to articulation tool and the handles were all over the place. Then I switched back to the Expressions and all was well. Then switched back to articulations are all is well. So not freaking out and simply switching tools corrects the problem. Very strange.

This may not be apropos at all, but are you in Page View? And, if so, are you viewing multiple pages? A while back I noticed with long/big files that my text blocks in particular would malfuntion if I was in a certain type of page view (doing mostly earlier music I don't often encounter dynamics). Now I tend to work with the view that gives you a single loose-leaf page and shift to multiple pages for short periods to check details, and that seems to work better. Haven't encounteed it in a while, but haven't dealt recently with large files, either. Whatever it is, I wish you luck in finding the reason.

An advice that pops up here regularly when something strange happens is to trash the preferences. Maybe that would be worth a try?

Thanks, Perotinus. I am indeed working in Page View with multiple pages. But I need to work in Page View with multiple pages, so I will try switching to another style and back to see what happens next time it happens.
Thanks, Anders, I may try that.
