IMac
Finale
JW plugins

This morning I updated the OS to 10.15.4. When I opened Finale each JW plug in "bundle" was flagged and offered to the trash. That makes for a long opening sequence - and no plugins! What's up?

Apparently the files cannot be validated: MacOS cannot verify that the files are free of malware. Yesterday they were.

I found this on a Facebook Finale power users page :

from Greg Angel :

There is a way around this....... for now. Apple will be closing this loophole/grace period sometime, so avoid OS updates if you need JW or other unsigned PIs.
1. launch Finale
2. when you get the warning, open System Preferences/Security
3. Click 'Allow Anyway'
4. Then Click Cancel in the dialog asking you to move the PI to the trash
5. repeat steps 3 and 4 for all warnings
6. quit Finale and relaunch it
7. now you will see the dialog with the third option to Open the unsigned PIs.

That worked. Ridiculous to go through it every time I open Finale, but it is a workaround. Thank you!

I trust Jari or somebody on the forum will let us know when the JW Plugins are running under the newest Catalina. Apple can be relentless in bombarding us with update notices.

What about TG Tools and Patterson, etc?

Giving Apple permission to update OS automatically is a poor choice for heavy Finale users. Usually Finale itself works, but 3rd-party plugins, drivers for elderly printers, and other things important to speedy workflow can take weeks or months. Sometimes they never arrive at all.

This is worse than I thought.

I followed the advice to open Security settings and click the CANCEl box, etc. Twenty or so apps later, Finale opened and functions normally. JWPlugins, however are no longer available from the menu.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I have relaunched Finale many times. Doesn't help.
I still have to check other plugins.

If the problem appeared with the 10.5.4 update, you could try to revert to MacOs 10.5.3, still available on the Apple website : https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads
Get the combo update, it seems to be recommended to do a complete install.

You should only have to go through this once per app after an OS update.

That won't work to install an earlier OS. The options are to Restore from a) Time Machine or other backup or b) APFS Snapshots if done within 24 hours.

This is wrong and that's why it keeps happening. You must click on the padlock icon first and enter your Admin passsword. If you allow the plug to access the proper folder, you won't get the dialog to move it to Trash.

Reinstalling the JW Plugins has worked for others.

I just updated to Catalina 10.15.4.

The install was flawless. All previous plugins including Jari, TG, and Patterson are running as always with no error messages.

The "disappearing plugins" seem dependent on the exact architecture of your computer. No such issues at all with my equipment.

It depends on your specific settings from before updating to Catalina.

With macOS Mojave and a few earlier versions, you had several options in the System Preferences on allowing 3rd-party software. "Allow all apps," "Allow only signed apps," or "Only Allow Apps from the App Store." The wording may be slightly different.

If you selected "Allow only signed apps" or "Only allow apps from the App Store" on the older OSs, then you would have needed to manually allow JW plugins to run. This created an exception for each plugin. So when you upgraded to macOS Catalina, your computer remembered the exception and did not disable any JW Plugins.

However, if you selected "Allow all apps" (which was more convenient), your computer didn't have these exceptions. Therefore, when you upgraded to macOS Catalina where the default is "Allow only signed apps," your computer didn't have permission to run the JW Plugins. So it blocked them.

However, even on macOS Catalina, you still need to approve new JW Plugins when you download them.

Theoretically, Jari could fix this by signing all his apps. But that would require him to get an Apple developer account, which costs $99/year among several other hurdles. So I totally understand if he doesn't fix it.
