I have a trombone part that I need to have play an alternate line the second time in a repeated section. Rather than writing a divisi part that would look messy, I need to only have four bars of a new staff under the original part. Is this possible?

After adding it with the Staff tool or Score Manager, you can immediately hide it everywhere by selecting it in the Staff tool--for the whole piece--and then using Hide Empty Staves on the Staff menu. You'll then see something that looks like this:
Right click on the handle and choose Show to make it reappear where you want it.
If you only want the staff to appear on part of the system, you can then hide individual measures by applying the "Force Hide Staff (Cutaway)" staff style to just those measures.
If you want the barlines connected as shown above, you have to add a group with the Staff tool comprised of your two staves.

By The Way:
The staff hiding only happens in Page View.
You can still see all staves in Scroll View.
