Hi Forum,

When adding measures, they seem to have a default width of about 250 EVPUs. When working with the Speedy Entry Tool, the width quickly crams up the notes, preventing good visibility.

Is there a way to change the default width "barline-to-barline" when adding measures?

Thanks,

If you can enter the music in Scroll View, I think that doesn't happen.

Hi Motet,

No, the behavior is the same.

Turn Automatic Music Spacing on (Preferences > Edit).

My rule of thumb is to keep AMS on when entering music, then turn it off when doing layout and adjustments. If needed, you can still apply spacing manually (select measure(s) and hit 4).

As Far As I Can Tell, the width of added measures (added to the end of the document) is equal to the width of the last measure before the added measures.

Similarly, the width of inserted measures is equal to the width of the last measure before the inserted measures.

Regarding you issue “When working with the Speedy Entry Tool, the width quickly crams up the notes, preventing good visibility” :
What I would do:
Measure Tool.
Select all the added measures.
Double-click the selected, to get to the Measure Attributes.
Type a (value for the desired) width, and click OK.

Very good, thank you for your advice.

You are right. I guess I don't tend to look at the screen when I'm entering music. Simple entry does seem to adjust as you go along. Alas, I suspect this is unlikely to ever be fixed.

That's actually a pretty practicable workaround as well, thank you, Peter.

Interesting. Do you work mainly on simple? If yes, I'd be interested to know why.

Thanks,

No, I use Speedy. As I said, I don't usually look at the screen, so I live with it.

If you hit Esc, you'll leave the Speedy Entry tool and the measure will be respaced, then you can go back. Not ideal, I know. You probably want to turn off "fill with rests at end of measure" in that case.
