Hello all,

I've noticed that no matter what I do, I cannot get Finale to extend beams over rests in two layers at once (see attached). When I am in speedy entry, I see the beams extending in both layers. When I exit speedy entry, one layer's beam disappears. I also notice that it seems to be connected in some way to how rests behave, since the rests appear independent when viewing within the speedy frame, but then join together upon exit. With respect to that, I have two questions

1) Am I doing something wrong? (I've tried "/" in speedy entry in every possible combination, and that doesn't help)
2) Is it in fact notationally accurate and/or desirable to see the beam extension in only one layer? It seems incorrect to me, but maybe there is some kind of advantage, since it is a bit less cluttered and the effect of seeing at least one beam over the rest does accomplish the desired goal of making the rhythmic groupings clear.

Many thanks!

Justin

It is a bug. Will probably never be fixed.

But you can likely fix it by hand with the beam extension tool.

I could probably fix it with the beam extension tool--but that would take HOURS that I might not want to spend. But thanks for the suggestion!

Looks like you can't anyway! I was going to suggest using the copy filter to propagate the manual adjustment, but if you switch to layer 2 to extend the beams, then they show up already extended. Extending them further doesn't see to work.

Personally, I don't like the look of beams extended over rests, but I guess it's helpful in gnarly music.

Another situation where the JW Change plugin can fix this.
