JW Plugins not working
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hi, Since the latest Catalina upgrade, I get the following message when i try to launch Finale
“jwstaffpolyphony64.bundle” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.
I have removed all jw plugins, redownloaded them and attempted to put them in the plugins folder one at a time, with the same results. They worked fine prior to the last OSX update.
Is anybody else having this problem?
Other plugins (TG, Patterson) work fine, btw.

There is discussion and a possible solution here:

I recall someone saying you can run the Windows version of Finale in a virtual machine on the Mac. If I had a Mac, I might be tempted to do that in put an end to the endless nonsense resulting from Apple updates.

I just updated to Catalina 10.15.4.
The install was flawless. All previous plugins including Jari, TG and Patterson are running as always with no error messages.
The "disappearing plugins" seem dependent on the exact architecture of your computer. No such issues at all with my equipment.

It doesn't depend on your architecture. It depends on your settings before the update.peerlessnerd wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 5:57 amI just updated to Catalina 10.15.4.

So even if all the plugins you currently use don't have the issue, you'll still get the issue if you install a new JW Plugin (not 100% sure about TG or Patterson).
Long story short, before Catalina, there were a variety of settings you could have in System Preferences about apps from unidentified developers. Some blocked them and you already needed to do this. Albeit, the error messages were way more intuitive, so you may not have noticed. If you went this route, macOS saved the plugin as an exception. So when you upgraded to Catalina, everything is fine. However, if there wasn't an exception, it gives you this error.
There are other possibilities depending on your specific settings and install process from before Catalina, but I think this gives you an overview of the behind the scenes.

after you got the error message, close Finale. Then open the macos System Preferences, open "Security & Privacy" and navigate to the "General" tab. You should see a warning in the bottom area of the dialogue (see attached screenshot). Click "Allow Anyway", close the dialog, start Finale and enjoy.
Kind regards,
Alex
And when that doesn't work?

FIrst, I have to go through and activate them one at a time. Monterey pretends it's doing what it's asked - but on Finale relaunch, I just get the same message. Maybe Finale could program in an exception? JW doesn't come with package installers - TG Tools was fine.
Alas I need JW because it does stuff that Finale, for some reason, doesn't.
edit - added screenshots.

1) Don't click on Move to Trash, but on Cancel
2) MacOS System Preferences -> Security and Privacy -> General : click on "Autorize anyway" as shown on an image in a previous post by kolex.
3) Quit and relaunch Finale
4) Click on Open
5) Repeat the procedure for each JW plug-in

That absolutely does not work any more. I've done that. It looks like Jari needs to register with Apple.

Folks, rather than inveigh against Jari (who is not here to defend himself and who had provided his plugins for free), note that this is hardly limited to JW plugins. It’s true for a lot of third-party independent software. The sandboxing Apple does is a good thing; it’s not the fault of developers, and can readily be bypassed as needed if you trust the developer/source. This isn’t “ridiculous,” it’s good software practice, and really not worth kvetching about. Just by $0.02.

Remark : those who have a M1 Mac can only run Finale 27.2 (native by default) in Rosetta mode to access the JW plug-ins.

I stepped around this problem by turning off "Gatekeeper" (using the Onyx utility). Then the plugins load readily. Gatekeeper will turn itself back on every month or so and the process needs to be repeated.

Removing the quarantine attribute should be sufficient to fix it permanently.
In Terminal, go to the plug-ins folder.
Then use:

Only someone who never worked in Windows Support can say that. I did my time and will never own a Win machine again.
Have you ever kept track of the ratio of Win/Mac problems on the official board? You really should.

sudo spctl --master-disable
It sometimes needs to be reset after an OS update but not always.

Windows has given me very little trouble. (Fortunately, I've never worked in Windows support.)
I'm a big fan of UNIX, though, and am sure I'd like the Mac, too. But they should keep things backwardly compatible. This business of "can't run Finale 27 with Cute Panda" is ridiculous.

If you're going to use the command line, then it would be better just to remove the quarantine attribute from the plug-ins, so that they launch without further problem, rather than turning off the entire GateKeeper security system.
This command will remove the quarantine attribute from ALL files in MakeMusic's Support folders.
It's the difference between handing out swipe keys to a few people and smashing down the door.
Code: Select all
find '/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/' -name '*' -print0 | xargs -0 xattr -c

As a matter of fact Mike, yes, I was a beta tester for two large companies for over 5 years. Although Mac's are only about 10% or 15% of the market, they produced 80% of the issues. Even on this forum Mac OS has many complaints.Only someone who never worked in Windows Support can say that. I did my time and will never own a Win machine again.
Have you ever kept track of the ratio of Win/Mac problems on the official board? You really should.
I have no real love affair for MS or Windows either. I love my iphone and ipad. They work great. So I am in no way a Mac/Apple hater.
When either computer is working there really isn't much of any difference. The fact Mac cost more and doesn't offer any advantage and probably some big disadvantage in OS is my reason for not owning a Mac computer.
Nobody wants to run Mac OS on a Windows machine!I recall someone saying you can run the Windows version of Finale in a virtual machine on the Mac.
But they should keep things backwardly compatible. This business of "can't run Finale 27 with Cute Panda" is ridiculous.
