finale 64 bit on iMac (latest version)
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Since installing finale, from print music,(iMac) many weird things happen. the biggest one is "extract parts". The extracted parts are all "scrunched up" and my only solution at the moment is to utilities>fit measures>lock layout with 4 measures then use fit measures to get it to look readable. I tried utilities> music spacing> etc with slight improvement
Ive attached a trumpet part as an example.
Also strange to me is that unlike Print Music, when a part is extracted, the instrument name is omitted and i have to add the instrument name by using TEXT.
Also, adding "mute" using text, it doesn't take, I've tried lower case, upper case and have not yet found out what i'm doing incorrectly.
I would attach the score, but its "too large" ....
Any thoughts?

To be clear, are you extracting parts or making linked parts?
And also, what version of Finale are you using?

Part extraction (the old way of making parts) creates a separate document for each part.
While there are reasons that method still makes sense in some cases, most people use Linked Parts, so that the parts remain part of the original document, and changes in the full score get changed in the parts.
This is covered in the manual, so that's where you should start.

For parts names, you should create (in the score) a text block and in the Text menu, select Inserts -> Part/Score name.
These "smart" blocks will display as "Score" in the score (or whatever is mentioned in the File info window), and as the Staff name in each part.

Well, I've kind of figured out some of it, except the difference between a "Linked file" and a "Non linked file"
I tried the Finale knowledge base, and got no place.
I finally noticed that when I extracted an instrument, it came up with all the systems locked, so I "removed all system locks" and the part came out quite nicely - except the third page of the part would not show until I hit print, by which time I couldn't make any changes to the third page....I haven't solved that one yet.
As far as linked goes, I added a note on the score to see if the note would show up on the part, but no....so I'm guessing that the parts are not linked.
this is still a work in progress....what the heck, with the @#$@%*& virus isolation thing going, at least there's no big hurry.

In other words, for that reason, once the separate files have been created (extracted), no interaction is possible, as opposed to linked parts, which are part of the same file as the score.Bill Stevens wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 3:53 pmPart extraction (the old way of making parts) creates a separate document for each part.

Morning all, I have spent the last 8 - 10 hours over the last day or two, in the finale tutorials and have learned a great deal.
"working with linked parts" has been an education, to say the least.
I'm still confused as to why, when I add a note to the score (as a test) it doesn't show up un the associated path, so I'm still on a learning curve.
You guys have been so much help, I'll let you know as I continue to learn.
