Problems deleting a split measure triplet
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
In my score (attached) I have (in measure 5) a startoff measure (split) for my piece. The first words of my piece are contained within the Triplet. Now, I realized that a triplet is not what I want. I want the triplet to be simply three eighth notes. The problem is that FINALE won't let me just replace the Triplet with 3 eighth notes (even when I ensure the previous part of the split measure will add up to 4 beats for the total measure. In addition, and most distressing, is that any attempt by me to simply delete the triplet in measure 5 results in terrible breakage of my lyric system.

With three plain eighths, mm. 4+5 would add up to four quarters plus an eighth, so it might not be the best notation, but to get what you want you can double click on measure 5 and change the 1/4 to 3/8. Then delete the triplet and re-enter the three eighth notes.

Change the time signature of the first part of the measure to 5/8. It will also insert a blank 3/8 measure on the next page. Ignore that for now. Go to the next measure, that has the lyrics, and change the time signature to 3/8. Select the triplet bracket, and delete it. go back to the previous measure, select the measure stack, and delete it. Fix the other notes in that measure.
You probably also want to learn about hyphens and word extensions.

A triplet (1 beat) is not equal to 3 regular eighths (1 1/2 beats). Measure 5 needs an extra eighth, so I deleted the triplet and changed the time signature from 1/4 to 3/8. It looks OK and does not affect the lyrics. See the attached file.

I didn't realize he wanted to shorten the previous measure (you've got a half note tied to an eighth rest, by the way, Mike).
The Split Measure plug-in can actually do this by specifying 2.5 as the split point, though mysteriously it puts a half-rest in the 5/8 part of the measure. Edit Frame reveals that this half rest has a duration of 2560 EDUs, or 2.5 quarter notes! This can of course be deleted.

There seems to be a lot that is yet to be composed, so it's impossible to guess the context with so much missing. I think the best way to approach it is to complete the piece in its entirety and then worry about the changes.
