Hello, how to end the use of marcato as an expression in a score. I might want to use it for a certain number of measures and then end it for regular expression.

Use accents instead? One occasionally sees f marcato and the like, but accents are much more common. Other than writing "non-marcato" or somesuch, there's nothing I know of that means "no longer marcato."

What about loco? Doesn't that mean, whatever you were doing, stop doing it?

No, that only cancels 8va ("in the right place" or something like that, cognate with "location").

(non-marcato) in parens could be used to cancel at the appropriate location.

"ord." (for ordinario) would do in a pinch. it would be understood.

You could add a dotted line (smart shape) after marcato with a hook at the righthand end to where the effect of the expression no longer is desired if it only affects a few measures. It is often used, not only in conjunction with the octave transpositions, but also sul G, non vibr., flautando, etc..

String players are used to "ord." but I don't know that I've ever seen it in a wind part.

When the scores I work on use the directive marcato, it may or may not be clear where the style is to be "turned off" and is almost never notated. I think non-marcato makes it crystal clear.

I agree that ord. may not be familiar to wind players. It's rarely if ever used in the band and jazz world and in music aimed at school and amateur players.
