I'm noticing some strange behavior with music spacing and ties, and am wondering if I'm going a little crazy. Using note spacing, with a tie from the last note in the first measure to the first note in the second measure on second staff only, there's some extra unwanted space at the end of the first measure. When I remove the tie from that note, the spacing issue goes away. Images are attached. However, the tie on the first staff does not affect the spacing one way or another! What am I missing here? There seems no way to correct this. I've tried to clear manual adjustments, both via Document Options > Spacing and via Edit > Clear Selected Items.

If, as an experiment, you break the beam on the last eighth in first staff so that it has a flag, does the first staff then influence the spacing?

What music font are you using? It's not a Finale font. As an experiment, change the music font to Maestro, the standard Finale font (Document Menu > Change Default Music Font). If that doesn't work, attach a small sample file (those 2 measures)

If I break the beam in the upper staff, the spacing issue does occur there as well. Interesting.

The font I am using is Golden Age. I've attached an excerpt Finale file with the font reverted to Maestro. The issue is still there.

Looks like the flag plus tie is generating extra space for some reason. To get around it you can use the measure tool to set Extra Space at End to some negative number.

Motet: I'll try that, thanks. There are several spots where I see this, so it will take some time--but at least it IS a workaround!

Thanks again.

If you've got parts, you'll need to do it in the score and in the part with the flag.

I've done a little more exploring with this, and it seems that this isn't an anomaly with this document but rather standard Finale behavior, which is regulated by the "minimum distance between notes with ties" setting. What should occur, I think, is that Finale should apply this minimum distance value differently when the tie goes across the barline from a flagged note, since the flag already allots extra horizontal space. There's no reason for extra horizontal space for both the flag and the tie. My plan is to reduce that value from the default 0.1666 to about 0.1. As long as I don't try to squeeze too many measures on a system, I think that should still be reasonable for ties that occur within the measure.
