Help with a new hymnal
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I hope this is the proper place for this question. We are using Finale to create a secondary hymnal for our church of about 100 hymns. Our musicians have learned everything from the ground up but certain songs using 6/8, 12/8, 9/8, and 3/2 time signatures have really slowed us down. We have about 30 such songs. Basic SATB hymns. Does anyone out there know of anyone who would write such hymns in Finale for a fee. We have not learned how to scan but we have the music that could be scanned. Just trying to speed up this project and not drive my musicians crazy.

You wrote that you want someone to write hymns in Finale, but do you mean you want hymns already written to be put in Finale? I expect that there are plenty of forum members looking for something to do while stuck in quarantine who might help you.
Do you have a style that would need to be matched? If so, you should provide a template.
Maybe scan one of the hymns and post here.

Yes, these are all hymnals that are already in other hymnals. We did this once before but it was a cut/paste job, and we are redoing it with Finale so we can have a professionally looking printed hymnal. And yes we do have a template we would provide.

Not now! SmartScore is still 32 bit, and will not run on Mojave or Catalina. A 64 bit version is expected soon. I would wait before making the purchase.ebiggs1 wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 2:20 pmIf you have good copy you can get excellent results using Smart Score

Once that is released, it’s an absolute yes vote!

Fellure,
If these are hymns from other hymnals, be sure there are no copyright issues. Even if they are old hymns sometimes there are arrangement copyrights in place.

Hello. I'd like to try, if you'll let me (and If you like the result) for free.Fellure5 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 9:02 pmI hope this is the proper place for this question. I don't know if this helps, but the most common reason for people having problems with compound time signature is that people enter the time signature as ( for example, with 6/8): number of beats: 6; beat duration: eighth note. Whereas to work properly it needs to be: number of beats: 2; beat duration: dotted quarter note.

Fellure:
Just for information. Finale files for the current Baptist hymnal (all 600 pages) including full orchestrations has been published by LifeWay Publishing Co. years ago. It costs $3,000 +/- for the file. If you have a friend in a big Baptist church he might give you a Finale file for an individual hymn.

No! The proper way is to contact LifeWay Publishing and ask to purchase the needed hymns.robertstiffler wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 2:21 pmIf you have a friend in a big Baptist church he might give you a Finale file for an individual hymn.

I'm going to agree with N. If you're just doing one or two pieces, you might skate under the radar. But if your plan is to put together a large, new hymnal, you really need to be concerned with copyrights.
And no, there is no "fair use" for churches and schools.
Having said that, send me one of the charts at wawoodman at aol dot com, and I'll have a look.

Even in church you must be honest. Even more so don't you think? No! The proper way is to contact LifeWay Publishing and ask to purchase the needed hymns.

I think the OP merely overlooked the copyright issue. If a hymn is "traditional" or author "unknown," he may copy the work. If the arrangement is copyrighted then permission is probably required. No harm in asking for permission from the publisher, who might not insist on financial compensation; since the project is for non-profit (monetarily).

Music and lyrics published in 1924 or earlier are in the public domain. After 1924 you need to get a release or permission. Church or hymn or not, that's the law.
