I gave the cymbals their own staff, their own channel, and wrote ffff as the dynamic. All I get is a barely audible suspended cymbal played with a cotton ball. How can I get a good, loud cymbal crash? Do I need to import something from Kontakt?

Can you post a sample file for us to test?

Try "Reassign Playback Sounds" (in MIDI/Audio drop-down menu). Toggling between Garritan and SmartMusic in Score Manager may also unlock the audio, or switching instruments temporarily. I would firstly check the volume settings in "VST Banks and Effects" and/or the Mixer as Finale can surreptitiously attenuate the volume.

Are you using the Aria player? Put the crash cymbals in its own bank and then raise the bank volume.
