Is there such a thing (or can I create) a crescendo and decrescendo facing each other as a single unit? Think short birdmouths facing each other.

This can be done as a Shape Expression, for sure. I don't think Smart Lines can do it. If you are just trying to simplify the process, and can use 2 Smart Lines, then Jari has a plugin for that.

Thanks, Zuill. I found it in the Bravura font as one character, but it's a bit heavy. Which of Jari's plugins would help?

Dorico does this automatically. They call it "messa di voce", a term I've never heard before in my 35 years in the business. It's commonly called a "swell", which is swell by me.

‘Messa di voce’ is a standard (but fairly advanced) vocal technique. I've not heard the term applied to instrumental performance.

If you're wanting this for your Brahms (just guessing), I think you need two symbols. It's important where they start and end. The swell may be OK for a single note.

Jari's are a little long, but I'm gonna use them anyway.

Why not use the normal SmartShape hairpins, which can be exactly the length you want?

That’s what I wound up doing. Did them once, and copied as needed with the filter.

Thanks, all.
