Hello Collective Wisdom,
Finale 2012 here on Mac OS 10.6.8.
Using File -> SmartScore Lite to Import Existing TIFF file, with mixed success.
On the whole things go well, but there are mysteries.
Example: see the two pics attached. Pic 1 shows a sharp, pic 2 a sharp and a natural; these are artifacts, and I need to get rid of them.
Selection tool highlights them but Delete doesn't delete them.
Selecting the measure and then Edit -> Clear All Items doesn't get rid of them.
Even more curious, starting from pic 1, selecting the measure and then deleting it makes the # show up in the following measure!!
And deleting that measure moves the artifact # again!
What are these rogue accidentals and how do I get rid of them??
TIA for all help!
Ch.S.

Sounds like one sharp is the key signature, so if that's wrong, change it with the key signature tool. The second one looks like a key change from one flat to one sharp (I'm assuming it's tenor clef as well).

Thanks for this.
Not long after posting my question last night, I stumbled on the solution,-- yes indeed it was a Time Sig issue.
SmartScan does a lot of things well, but it also does some very weird things.
Why it would have "detected" non-existent time-sig changes in this innocent document is beyond me.
My current project is a natural fit for SmartScan, and I enjoy using it, but it sure keeps me on my toes, and often has me scratching my head and guessing.
Thanks again for your insightful help!

If you are planning on doing a lot of scanning, buy the latest edition of SmartScore at their website. It is far superior to the lite version that used to come with Finale. You will have a lot less head-scratching to do.

I’m still waiting fo the new release. They keep pushing back the release date.

Once it appears, though, John is absolutely right!

I wish there were a "not musically likely" option that would filter out things like a time signature change after one bar, or a 7/16 bar in the middle of 4/4 with no time signature shown. Still, speaking as one who briefly worked on music recognition 25 years ago after developing a successful OCR (text, that is) program, I think it does a remarkably good job.

Do you know anything about the company, Mike? Is it one guy in Ojai? When I first got the program, the first thing I tried it on crashed (a crappy harp part) and he was very responsive, scanning it for me on his system.

I know nothing. I’m just waiting. The last thing on their website still says June 1, so they are behind, again. I certainly don’t want a half-baked release, but perfection is the enemy of good enough.
