Follow the onscreen prompts to install the Finale v26.3 Update for Macintosh and benefit from the following features, fixes, and more.
  • Navigation. Finale's underlying drawing mechanism has been updated to offer better performance and responsiveness while editing and scrolling.
  • Dark Mode. Finale now includes a more comprehensive UI experience when running the application in macOS' Dark Mode.
  • Simple Entry. Stems are now always displayed with the correct thickness at all zoom levels when using Simple Entry.
  • Text. Rotated text (such as in custom Smart Lines) now displays correctly at all combinations of staff reduction and zoom level.
  • Fonts. The order of font-family submenus has been corrected for macOS 10.15.
  • EPS export. EPS graphics exported from Finale now import and display correctly.
  • Font characters. Zero-width text characters now display correctly regardless of zoom level, font size, and proximity to page edge.
  • Chord symbols. The Handwritten document style now uses consistent fonts for chord symbols, and chord symbols with flats are now recognized in Type Into Score mode.
  • Saving files. If Finale encounters a problem saving a document, a warning is displayed with suggestions for further action.
  • MusicXML. Multiple improvements have been made to both MusicXML import and export.
For a full list of new features and fixes, see What's New in the online Finale User Manual.
EPS graphics exported from Finale and imported back still look rubbish, as do imported EPS files generated outside of Finale.

The tool palettes don't change for Dark Mode.

More important, did they break anything?

Always wait a few weeks before upgrading--there's typically some major screw-up.

I wish I had read your comment first! I downloaded and opened it right away, and it has abruptly quit on me twice in as many minutes.

Is there some way to go back to the version I had before I did this upgrade, or am I stuck?

Uninstall it. Then, go to your Finale account > My software. There, you can download the earlier version.

One can go from v26.3 back to v26.2? I never found a way to do that. Fortunately, I saved the v25.2 install file in my downloads folder, just in case. I read in another thread about install issues with v26.3, so I'm holding off. Sounds like it might still be in Beta testing.

I guess not. My bad, sorry.

Using us as beta testers? I’m shocked. Shocked, I say.

You can of course restore the old application from your backup. Updates to all the support files are largely inconsequential.

26.3 installed and it is running perfectly for me. The print dialog box is there but it comes and goes with either a MM update or MS update! So I will see.

"If Finale encounters a problem saving a document, a warning is displayed with suggestions for further action."

That sounds like they've made an attempt to fix (or rather workaround) the old "can't-save because of temp-file" bug.

Online help pages haven't been updated yet to list the full details.

Someone at MM must have said "Yep, good to go. No more time needed on this."

I'm not sure what your picture refers to, but the way to fix the temp file issue is not with a suggestion of what to do next when the error happens, but rather to keep the temp files open or otherwise locked so that the error doesn't happen at all!

What! Fix it before it happens?

My picture refers to the Category Designer. That's what it looks like in Dark Mode.

Dark Mode, I believe, is a Mac only feature. I suppose there's a need for it, but I am not sure about its usefulness.

A feature to keep your bed partner from whacking you when you are using Finale late at night?

Even better, according to the Scoring Notes update post, they were like "We know there's big mistakes, but we missed the deadline… let's ship it anyway!"

https://www.scoringnotes.com/news/final ... -released/

Excerpt from post: Jason Wick told Scoring Notes that their approach was to prioritize the dialogs based on usage data and hammer through tweaking as many as possible in the time available. “So yes,” Jason said, “there will be a handful of dialogs where you might see something like this.” Hopefully the remaining items will make it in a future update.

On macOS, you can turn off dark mode via a terminal command:

Code: Select all

defaults write com.makemusic.Finale26 NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance 1
then restart Finale.

For me, I have encountered a bug in Finale Scripts:

All my Finale Scripts involving the text tool stopped working, witch is a huge setback for me since they help me save a ton of time. They seemingly run, but are not producing any results, some scripts just flat out stoppes.

I have sent MakeMusic a support ticket. I also asked how to roll back to a previous version. I will report back what they answer.
