I could have sworn it was possible to unlock only selected systems, but now, if I select even just one system to unlock, it unlocks all of the systems of the piece, undoing all manner of effort to get those systems just as I want them.

Is there no way to just unlock selected systems?

UPDATE: If I use the keyboard shortcut "shift-command-U", it unlocks all systems, even if just one is selected. If I pull down from the Utilities menu and choose "unlock systems", it unlocks just the selected systems.

Try shift-command-L and see what happens.

mark carlson,

In what tool are you? - Page layout Tool? - Selection Tool? - or?

The keyboard shortcut
⇧⌘U
will unlock all systems, no matter what tool you are in.

When you are in the Selection Tool, you can lock selected systems by hitting the letter L key (⌘L works too).

When you are in the Selection Tool, you can unlock selected systems by hitting the letter U key (⇧⌘L works too).

At least that is how Finale works for me.

I've always used L (lock) and U (unlock) in the Selection tool. Never had a problem.

Not surprisingly, the user manual sows confusion rather than clarifies:

Yes, I have only done this using the Selection Tool, and I have only ever used shift-command U to unlock anything--I never knew about just hitting the U key. But I am happy to say that it works as you said it would!

Thanks,

Mark

According to the manual Command+Shift+U is only supposed to unlock selected systems in the Selection tool (it's unclear what it does elsewhere), but it sounds like it unlocks everything. Might be worth reporting, though likely they'll be unable to fix it.

And the Windows manual says

but Ctrl-U unlocks nothing for me, no matter what's selected.

Updating the Finale manual is a big and complicated task.

In the manual I have occasionally found paragraphs with “obsolete” contents.

The 2012 manual says +L and +U will work, whatever that means, so they at least visited that part of the manual.
