Multimeasure rest start point edit not sticking

For obscure reasons I sometimes need to edit the start point of my multimeasure rests from the default 1.25 spaces to 5.25. I do this when using the selection tool: select the multimeasure rest in question, right-click, Multimeasure rests -> Edit..., Adjust Start Point. This works fine - looks positively dandy. Then, seemingly as soon as I turn my back, or especially as soon as I save it as a PDF, that change is lost, including in the damn PDF. This is extremely annoying and I can’t find a way round it. For what it's worth I have both Automatic Update Layout and Automatic Music Spacing turned OFF in the prefs. Any clues?

There are other good reasons to turn "Update automatically" off as well, but you then need to be careful--if you add music to the score in measures formerly part of a multimeasure rest, you must update the part manually to get that music to show up. In the Selection tool, right-click on the rest in the part and pick Multimeasure rests/Create and it will update just that one rest.

There's one additional reason: if you want to move the end of a MM rest symbol to the left because of a clef change, you may do so in chosen measures only without changing others.

I usually turn off the 'update automatically' option, and just have to remember to use the 'create MM rests' if adding new material in the score (as motet said), or adding cues in the parts.

I wish they'd fix this by only updating those rests that need it, not every damn MM rest in the piece, though that seems highly unlikely. I turn that option off, and though I'm very careful, I've forgotten once or twice, with terrible results.
