correct grace note slur
Hi all,
Regarding use of slurs for flute, I tend to think Exhibit B makes more sense at 120bpm. Would you agree?
Exhibit A: (grace notes get there own slur): Exhibit B: (grace notes are included in one overarching slur): Cheers,
Hector.

The slur in Exhibit B shouldn't cause any problem, I think. This might be more traditional, though:

Yes, of course. In this case, though, I personally would prefer the grace-note slur on the "wrong" side to avoid cluttering with the ledger lines.

Hector Pascal,
Are you engraving someone else’s composition?
In that case you should follow the composer’s manuscript.
Or are you engraving your own composition?
In that case you should make it as clear as possible what you want to hear.

Re: correct grace note slur
Perhaps not unconditionally. If we are speaking of living composers, I for one would give my version, and rely on it to be accepted or corrected in proof reading by the composer. I don't think a good publisher (if that's what we are talking about) would hire an engraver without his/her own knowledge and ideas.Peter Thomsen wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:18 pmAre you engraving someone else’s composition?

In the case of no longer living composers, the publisher, or some other proof reader would (should) take on that responsibility.

Re: correct grace note slur
Thanks, everyone
Yes, it's my own music. Having thought about it a bit more with the benefit of your input, I will first consider the tonguing/phrasing that sounds best (to my ear); and then, once that is decided, I'll consider if a flautist can be expected to perform that at crotchet = 120.
When writing for woodwinds, I have a tendency to shy away from ending one slur and beginning the next slur all on the same note, but I shall refrain from offering an explanation lest I become tongue-tied!
Cheerio,
Hector.

I don't care what the established protocol is, I always go for clarity to the director/musician.

Hi Hector. I think both of your original versions are fine. It just depends on what tonguing you want.
