There is already a thread about this, but the information in that thread, which simply reiterates what is already in the Help file, is not helpful. Here's why.

When I click speedy entry in the command bar, an incomplete measure autofills with rests, so it is not possible to add a dot to any note in it.

To remove a rest, one must leave speedy entry. After the rest(s) is/are removed, reentering speedy entry once again autofills the measure with rests, so it is not possible to add a dot to any note.

Unchecking Jump to Next Measure in the Speedy menu makes no difference.

Unchecking Check for Extra Notes in the Speedy menu makes no difference.

I must be missing something obvious, but I can't think of what it is. Does anyone know how actually to double dot a note in Finale?

There shouldn't be a problem using a double dot if the math adds up. I don't use fill with rests as it is a nuisance for me. I do the math myself, and don't let Finale do it for me. Let us know what all the values are in the measure and we might be able to help with the math.

Are you using Windows Finale or Mac Finale? and what Finale version?

To delete a rest you do not have to leave the Speedy Entry Tool.
Just position the crosshair on the rest.
Then, delete the rest via the delete key.

You can dot (or double-dot) a note as you enter it.
Just hit the . key.

Entry string for a double-dotted quarter:
5 (enters the quarter)
. (turns the quarter into a dotted quarter)
. (turns the dotted quarter into a double-dotted quarter)

Not true. Put the cursor over the rest and press the Delete key.

zuill's advice should solve it. Speedy Tool > Speedy menu > Speedy Options > Uncheck "Fill with rests at end of measure".
Finale 26.3, 27.4.1
Windows 10

I find "fill with rests" a big time-saver, but we can agree to disagree. I think the real issue here is not realizing you can delete notes in Speedy entry.
