I thought I read in the details that the latest version has a default of avoiding all collisions (presumably engraving) but I am getting lots of collisions. Why?

there is a new system that avoids collisions of articulations.
but there is no feature that corrects ALL collisions.
you can apply a plugin that will more-or-less fix vertical collisions (between staves and staff elements).
there is also the great plugin PerfectLayout, by Elbsound Studio.
