I should certainly know how to deal with this. I've read whatever I could find. But I'm still stumped.

As happens to everyone, I have new pages with different size staves and systems. Why, oh why, can't I set one system the way I want it, and then say "Make all of the other systems just like this one?"

Or can I, and I'm just too dim to learn how?

The settings in Documents/Page format/Score apply to each new page that is created as you go. Possible you resized Systems on the first page manually, but now new pages added use the original setting before those changes. After the fact, with the Resize Tool, right click on a system on the first page, and ask it to apply that System size to all Systems.

You can adjust the settings in Document menu > Page format > Score - so that all new pages are formatted as you need.

If you already have a page with systems formatted as you need, then you can use that to adjust the settings in Document menu > Page format > Score.

To do so:

Page Layout Tool.
Page Layout menu > Update Page Format for Score (select this option)

Click on one of the systems, and go to
Page Layout menu > Systems > Edit Margins…
Change one of the system margins, and then change it back (not via Undo).
This action will update the settings in Page Format for Score.

NB:
The option {Update Page Format for Score} is program specific, not document specific.
Remember to de-select {Update Page Format for Score} when you are done.

To update already existing pages, use the command
Page Layout menu > Redefine Pages > …

Peter and Zuill, I must be stupid. Or maybe I'm asking the question in the wrong way.

I've attached the score. Page 4 is just the way I want it. I cannot get pp 5ff to look the same. I know that there will be more porblems when it goes to 6 staves per system later on, but I'll deal with that when I get to it.

thanks.

When you said different sized systems, I thought you were talking about percentages. I think you meant systems with a different number of staves. In this file, I see that the distance between staves vary from system to system. If you want to make the spacing between staves the same throughout, that can be done. However, if you want to match page 4 spacing on page 5, you might find places where it might be too crowded, especially with the piano part.

Was this a scanned document?

I revised your file and made staff spacing uniform throughout. Possibly that is what you were trying to achieve, or something similar to it.

Zuill, that's just what I wanted. I was doing it by matching system to system to system, dragging with the Staff tool. Is that what you did, or is there a "magic" way?

In any case, thank you.

I noticed that many of your staves were spaced at 1.13 inches. So, I went to the Staff Tool, Respace Staves, and entered 1.13 inches for the amount there. After that, I went to the Page layout Tool and did a Respace Systems.

Thanks. I’ll write that down!

Zuill, to answer your earlier question, yes, originally from a scan. However, I added staves and expanded to a full 5-part in scroll view, where the original score had three staves, with hidden staves in some systems, and a soloist coming in later. The problem showed up when I went to page view for adding lyrics and layout.

Just a small remark: On page 3 the gap on the page could be filled out if you didn't hide the empty staves in the top system.

About the hiding empty staves: generally for just one system, I prefer not to hide the empty staves. For more extended sections, maybe. I would just leave the staves in there.

Regarding importing a scan: always be prepared to manually fix things like staff spacing, etc. Setting up a score from scratch in Finale starts with things fairly well balanced. After entering all the music, adjustments in spacing can be made if needed. Adding staves to a scanned file that is imported probably requires a bit more attention to the result and what needs to be adjusted from there.

Empty staves may not seem that informative, but on the other hand it spells out that the conductor can leave that section in peace for a moment.

Those measures are there so the singer can get a sip of water, I think. Just kidding.
