My default template for a new document has just one staff, 5 measures, no instruments assigned (and that's how want it). When I start entering notes (Simple or Speedy) I am being asked if I want to assign instruments. It's the same with an .ftm file or a .musx file. How can I avoid that? Is it possible, other than deleting all sound settings? (which I don't want to do, because I will/might be working on other files with playback needed)

Before you start entering notes, what is "Device" set to in the Score Manager? Try setting it to "None". If that doesn't work, set it to SoftSynth piano, say, which doesn't require "loading" anything.

Thanks. In Score Manager device set to None, and in in the VST Banks and Effects screen VST Instrument set to SmartMusic Softsynth, then all is ... quiet. Nice!
